For the Love of Collage (Pt. 4)

For my next three Moleskin journals, I went down a size because I wanted a smaller surface to work with. Each of these journals felt like an exploration of a particular visual theme.

The first journal was inspired by Alice in Wonderland and fairytales. The colorful, fanciful dress paired with the typography, gold flowers, and dragon (or jaberwocky?) conjures whimsy and bravery.

January 2023 - May 2023

For the second journal I wanted to create a fuller scene. While I was a security guard at the Speed Art Museum, we had Young Girl Reading by Jean-Honoré Fragonard on loan for several months. It was exciting to see his work in person, as I had studied some of his paintings in a European art history survey in college. For some reason the image of the painting that I used in my collage is mirrored from the original—perhaps a copyright issue?

June 2023 - November 2023

The third journal consists of layers and layers of patterns—I wanted it to be maximalist. The illustration of the man with a cup was from the drink menu at Endswell, a cocktail bar with French-inspired cuisine, in N.Y.C. I loved the illustrations so much I had to take the menu with me! The strawberry plate image reminded me of the strawberry wallpaper in my grandma’s house.

November 2023 - February 2024

This is my last collaged journal for the time being, as I have a few regular journals I want to use up.
