Becoming/Unfolding

This spring I participated in my first Louisville Visual Art’s art [squared], a local art fundraiser that supports LVA’s programming throughout the year. Each artist was provided an 8”x8” canvas to create their artwork on. I chose a 35mm film photograph I took of a flower at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, in 2021 for my piece. I wanted to create the texture of a weaving but keep the image easily readable, so I chose to only cut and weave the flowers in the image.

My sister suggested “Becoming” for the title of this piece, and I added “Unfolding” to it afterwards to reference the opening that happens when flowers bloom and the unfolding-like pattern of the warp and the weft. Reflecting on the title now, it feels perfect.

For the past few years, four of my art friends have participated in art [squared], but I always opted out of it because I didn’t think I could create anything on canvas and I was worried whatever I tried wouldn’t work. Participating in 411 Gallery’s 50/50 fundraiser (see my piece here) this past winter gave me the confidence to be a part of LVA’s this spring; both events have contributed to my becoming as an artist.
